Morocco in 5 Days: Two Private Itineraries, Day by Day

Travel Tips

Two private 5-day Morocco itineraries, day by day: a Marrakech loop to the Sahara via Ouzoud and the Middle Atlas, and a northern route from Casablanca to Fes. Prices, who each suits and what five days cannot fit.

Morocco in 5 Days: Two Private Itineraries, Day by Day

Five days is enough for one clear route through Morocco, not for the whole country. The real decision is which half you want: the mountains and the Sahara dunes, reached from Marrakech, or the imperial cities and the blue town of Chefchaouen in the north. Below are the two private 5-day tours we run, day by day exactly as they are planned, with real prices and an honest note on what each one leaves out.

Both are private: your own vehicle and your own driver, with no other travellers added to the car.

Itinerary 1: Marrakech to the Sahara via Ouzoud and the Middle Atlas

The Atlas to Sahara Signature Luxury Experience is a loop that starts and ends in Marrakech. Most short desert trips from Marrakech cross the High Atlas on the way out and again on the way back. This one heads north-east first, to the Ouzoud waterfalls and the Middle Atlas, and only crosses the High Atlas on the final day, so you see far less of the same road twice.

Day 1: Marrakech → Ouzoud Waterfalls → Bin El Ouidane

The first stop is Ouzoud, among the highest waterfalls in Morocco and a classic day trip from Marrakech in its own right. The day ends at Bin El Ouidane, a large reservoir lake in the Atlas foothills.

Day 2: Bin El Ouidane → Beni Mellal → Aglmam Sidi Ali

Beni Mellal sits at the foot of the Middle Atlas. From there the road climbs to Aglmam Sidi Ali, a high-altitude lake in open upland country. This is a part of Morocco that very few short itineraries reach.

Day 3: Aglmam Sidi Ali → Ziz Valley → Merzouga Desert

The route drops south through the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves, and reaches Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Day 4: Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Boumalne Dades

Heading west, you pass through Todra Gorge, a narrow limestone canyon, and continue to Boumalne Dades for the night.

Day 5: Boumalne Dades → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech

The last day stops at Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village, before the crossing of the High Atlas back to Marrakech.

Who it suits: travellers based in Marrakech who want the Sahara but would rather not repeat the standard desert road, and anyone curious about the Middle Atlas. Like every 5-day desert route from Marrakech, it includes long driving days; the distances are simply large.

Itinerary 2: Casablanca to Fes via the north

The 5-Day Northern Morocco Gems tour is a one-way route from Casablanca to Fes. There is no desert on it; instead it covers the Atlantic capital, the far north and two imperial cities. It is a practical choice if your flight lands in Casablanca.

Day 1: Casablanca and Rabat

The day covers the cultural heritage of Casablanca, best known for the Hassan II Mosque on the seafront, and Rabat, Morocco’s capital.

Day 2: Tangier and Chefchaouen

North to Tangier on the Strait of Gibraltar, then into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen, the town known for its blue-washed medina.

Day 3: Chefchaouen

A full day for Chefchaouen itself. The medina is small and easy to walk, and a slower day here balances the driving on either side.

Day 4: Volubilis and Meknes

Volubilis is the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, with mosaics still in place. Nearby Meknes is one of the four imperial cities, with its monumental gates and walls.

Day 5: Guided tour of Fes

The tour finishes with a guided visit of Fes, whose old medina, Fes el Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world.

Who it suits: first-time visitors interested in history, architecture and medinas, travellers arriving in Casablanca, and anyone visiting in high summer, when the Sahara is extremely hot. It is also the less expensive of the two.

Which one should you choose?

  • Sahara is the priority: the Atlas to Sahara loop from Marrakech.

  • Medinas, Roman ruins and Chefchaouen: the northern route from Casablanca.

  • Flying into Casablanca and out of Fes or nearby: the northern route avoids doubling back.

  • Staying in Marrakech before and after: the loop brings you back to your riad.

What 5 days cannot fit

  • The desert and the north together. Combining Merzouga with Chefchaouen and Fes takes about a week at a reasonable pace.

  • Marrakech itself. The Atlas loop starts and ends in Marrakech but has no city day, so add at least one day before or after.

  • The Atlantic coast. Neither route goes to Essaouira; that needs a separate day trip or a longer tour.

  • Getting home from Fes. The northern tour ends in Fes, so plan your onward journey or flight from there.

Shorter or longer options

If four days is all you have, there are two Marrakech-based routes: the 4-day Sahara tour via the Dades Valley and Merzouga (€540 per person for two) and the 4-day imperial cities tour via Chefchaouen (€610 per person for two).

With a week, you can join both halves of the country on the 7-day Chefchaouen, Fes and Merzouga tour from Marrakech (€1,040 per person for two). For planning help on longer trips, read our 7-day first-timer itinerary, the 10-day Marrakech, desert, Fes and Chefchaouen route and the 14-day grand tour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for Morocco?

Five days is enough for one region, not the whole country. You can do either a Sahara loop from Marrakech or the northern imperial cities and Chefchaouen from Casablanca to Fes. Combining the desert and the north takes about a week.

Can I see the Sahara in a 5-day trip from Marrakech?

Yes. The Atlas to Sahara Signature tour goes from Marrakech via the Ouzoud waterfalls and the Middle Atlas to Merzouga, then returns via Todra Gorge, Boumalne Dades and Ait Ben Haddou.

How much does a private 5-day Morocco tour cost?

Prices are per person by group size. The Casablanca to Fes tour costs 815 euros per person for two people and 450 euros per person for seven. The Atlas to Sahara loop from Marrakech costs 1,565 euros per person for two and 1,060 euros per person for seven.

Does the Casablanca to Fes tour include the desert?

No. It covers Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes and a guided tour of Fes. For the desert and the north together, look at the 7-day tour from Marrakech.

Can I change the 5-day itinerary?

Yes. All tours are private, and you can send a free custom itinerary request through the custom experience page to adjust stops or the start point.
