Morocco Atlas Mountains Tours: Imlil, Ourika and Berber Villages
Morocco’s Atlas Mountains rise about an hour south of Marrakech. Our private Atlas Mountains excursions are day trips to the Imlil valley below Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, and to the Ourika Valley, with walks between Berber villages and time for lunch before you drive back the same evening.
Longer walks and multi-day treks, including the two-day ascent of Toubkal, are not fixed products: the team builds them on request as a custom itinerary. Everything on this page is private, so the length of the walk, the lunch stop and the time you leave Marrakech are yours to set.
High, Middle and Anti-Atlas
“The Atlas” is three ranges rather than one, and which of them you see depends on where your trip goes.
| Range | Where | What it is like | How you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Atlas | South and south-east of Marrakech | The highest and most dramatic: Toubkal, snow on the summits in winter, villages on terraced slopes | Imlil and Ourika day trips; crossed at the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) on every Sahara tour from Marrakech |
| Middle Atlas | Between Fes and the desert | Lower, greener plateaus, cedar forests and Barbary macaques around Azrou and Ifrane | Driven through on the road from Fes to Merzouga |
| Anti-Atlas | South-west, inland from Agadir | Older, lower and drier: granite boulders, argan trees and almond terraces around Tafraoute | On request, as part of a custom itinerary |
The Imlil day trip
Imlil sits at 1,740 m at the head of a valley of walnut trees, about 1.5 hours from Marrakech, and is the trailhead for Toubkal. The road climbs through Asni, whose weekly market draws villagers from the surrounding valleys. From Imlil a mule path leads up to Aroumd, a village of stone houses stacked on a rocky spur with the Toubkal massif ahead. Most private day trips walk for two to four hours, stop for mint tea and lunch, and are back in Marrakech before dark. Our Imlil and Toubkal day-trip guide describes the route in more detail.
The Ourika Valley
The Ourika Valley is the closest green escape from Marrakech, about an hour by road. The route follows the Ourika river past argan-oil cooperatives and earth-built villages to Setti Fatma, where a scramble over boulders leads to the first of a chain of waterfalls. It is a gentler day than Imlil, with less climbing, and suits families and anyone who wants mountain scenery without a real hike. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends; the Ourika Valley day-trip guide has the timings.
Berber villages
The people of the High Atlas are Amazigh (Berber), and Tashelhit is the language you hear in the villages. Houses are built of stone and earth with flat roofs used for drying crops, fields are terraced and fed by channels from the river, and mules still carry most loads above the road. A village visit often includes mint tea in a Berber house, a walk through the fields and an explanation of how the year runs at altitude. Ask before photographing people, and keep shoulders and knees covered.
Hiking and trekking in the Atlas
- Day walks – two to five hours on mule paths between villages, built into the Imlil and Ourika trips. Good shoes and moderate fitness are enough.
- Multi-day treks – valley-to-valley routes around the Toubkal massif with nights in village guesthouses and mules for the bags, arranged on request.
- Mount Toubkal – normally a two-day ascent from Imlil with a night at a mountain refuge and a summit start before dawn. It is not a fixed tour; tell us your dates and experience and the team will say whether it can be built into your trip.

When to go to the Atlas Mountains
Spring and autumn are the walking seasons: clear air, green terraces in April and May, harvest colour in October. In summer, when Marrakech passes 40°C, the valleys are a welcome escape and walks start early. From December to March snow often covers the high paths and can briefly close the Tizi n’Tichka pass; the lower valleys are still reachable on most days, but evenings are cold and the light is wintry.
What to bring
Walking shoes with grip, a warm layer even in May, sun protection and cash in dirhams for tea, tips and village cooperatives. Water is easy to buy in Imlil and Setti Fatma, but not on the paths above them.
What a private Atlas day includes
Pick-up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech, a private air-conditioned vehicle and a driver who knows the mountain roads. You choose the start time, how far you walk and where you stop for photographs, and each tour page lists exactly what is included, from lunch to a local mountain guide.
Other ways into the mountains
The Atlas also appears on longer trips. Every Sahara desert tour from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas, and routes that start in Fes run through the Middle Atlas cedar forests – see Morocco tours from Fes. For waterfalls in the foothills, read our Ouzoud falls guide; for every other excursion, see day trips from Marrakech; and if you only have time for the city, start with Marrakech tours.
Frequently asked questions
How far are the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech?
Very close. The Ourika Valley is about an hour away by road and Imlil, the trailhead for Mount Toubkal, about 1.5 hours, so both work comfortably as private day trips with several hours left for walking, lunch and a village visit.
Can you climb Mount Toubkal in a day from Marrakech?
Not realistically. Toubkal is 4,167 m and the normal ascent takes two days from Imlil, with a night at a mountain refuge and an early summit start. It is not one of our fixed tours, but the team can build it into a custom itinerary on request.
Imlil or Ourika: which day trip should I choose?
Choose Imlil for a proper mountain walk, cooler air and views of the Toubkal massif. Choose Ourika for a shorter drive, riverside villages and waterfalls with less climbing, which suits families and anyone who wants the scenery without a hike.
Do you need to be fit for an Atlas Mountains day trip?
Only moderately. Village walks follow mule paths with some steady climbing, and on a private trip the guide sets the pace and distance around you. If anyone in your party has limited mobility, the Ourika Valley offers more to see from the road.
