Morocco Guided Tours with Driver-Guides and Local City Guides

Morocco guided tours with us use two kinds of guide. Your driver-guide stays with you for the whole trip, handling the road, the timings and the stories between towns. In the medinas of Fes and Marrakech, an official local guide licensed for that city takes over on foot. Every tour is private: no shared coach, no strangers.

Driver-guide or local guide: who does what

Knows bestThe High Atlas, the Draa Valley, the gorges, where to eat on the roadOne city's history, its lanes and its craftsmen
Where you need oneEverywhere outside the old citiesFes el-Bali and the Marrakech medina above all

The split exists for a practical reason. Vehicles cannot enter the medinas, and Fes el-Bali, with its thousands of unnamed lanes, is a place where an unguided first morning is mostly spent lost. Your driver-guide drops you at the right gate, the city guide walks you through, and the vehicle is waiting at the far side. At Volubilis and Ait Ben Haddou a site guide can be added the same way.

Private or small group: an honest comparison

We do not run small-group tours. Every departure is private, so it is worth being clear about how that compares with the small-group trips many companies sell.

A solo traveller who wants company may genuinely be better served by a group. For two people, and especially for three or four sharing one vehicle, private usually makes more sense. Our article on private vs group tours in Morocco goes through the trade-offs.

Cultural and historical tours

  • Fes: the Al-Attarine and Bou Inania medersas, the Chouara tannery and the craft quarters of Fes el-Bali (UNESCO, 1981). Give it a full day with a local guide.
  • Marrakech: the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Medersa, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. Our Marrakech tours cover the medina in a day, on foot or by bicycle.
  • Meknes and Volubilis: Moulay Ismail's imperial city and Morocco's finest Roman ruins, about an hour from Fes.
  • Berber villages: mint tea in a family home in the Ourika or Imlil valleys, an hour or so from Marrakech.
  • Hands-on days: a cooking class or a pottery class in Marrakech.

For a route built around history, our Morocco imperial cities tour page links all four royal capitals with Volubilis.

Adventure tours

  • Camel trekking in Erg Chebbi: into dunes up to about 150 m high, followed by a night at a desert camp near Merzouga.
  • Quad biking in the Marrakech Palmeraie and paragliding over Lalla Takerkoust lake, both short trips from the city.
  • A hot-air balloon flight at sunrise outside Marrakech.
  • Walking in the High Atlas: village trails above Imlil (1,740 m), covered on our Atlas Mountains tours page. A Toubkal ascent (4,167 m) can be built into a custom itinerary on request.
  • Gorges and waterfalls: on foot through the Dades Gorges and Todra Gorge, or the trail and boat ride at the Ouzoud falls.

Getting the most from your guides

  • Say what interests you. Architecture, food, crafts, the Jewish quarter of Fes, the earth-built kasbahs of the south: a guide who knows will shape the day around it.
  • Agree on shopping before you start. Medina walks often end at a carpet or leather shop. If you do not want to buy, say so at the outset and a good guide will leave the shops out.
  • Start early. Fes el-Bali and the Marrakech souks are at their best before 10:00, when the lanes are working rather than crowded.
  • Tip at the end. Tipping guides and drivers is customary in Morocco; our guide to money, cards and tipping in Morocco gives the usual amounts.

How a guided touring day runs

A touring day usually starts after breakfast, around 8:00 or 9:00, with three or four stops on the road and lunch wherever the route suits. Where a local guide is booked, your driver-guide meets them at the gate or the site entrance, so a medina walk or a visit to Ait Ben Haddou slots in without waiting around. In the evening you are dropped at your hotel, and the next morning's start time is agreed with you rather than imposed.

Choosing who to travel with

Whichever company you book, ask who will actually drive, whether the city guides are official, and what happens if a day needs to change. Our checklist of questions to ask a Morocco tour company covers the rest. If you would rather talk it through, contact our Marrakech team with your dates and interests.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide in Fes and Marrakech?

In Fes, almost certainly for the first day: the old medina is a maze, and a local guide turns confusion into understanding. Marrakech is easier to explore alone, but a half-day with a guide puts the palaces, medersas and souks in context before you go back on your own.

Can my driver-guide show me around the medina?

Your driver-guide takes you to the medina gate and meets you afterwards, while the walking tour inside is led by an official local guide for that city. It is the better arrangement anyway: a city guide knows one medina in far more depth than anyone who covers the whole country.

Do you run small group tours of Morocco?

No. Every tour is private, for you and the people you are travelling with. If you are travelling solo and want company, a small-group operator may suit you better; if you are two or more, a private tour gives you your own dates, pace and stops.

Are the adventure activities suitable for beginners?

Most are. Camel rides, quad biking, the balloon flight and village walks in the Atlas need no previous experience, only reasonable mobility. A multi-day trek or a Toubkal ascent needs real fitness, so tell us your experience and we will suggest a sensible level.
