Private vs Group Tours in Morocco: Which Is Right for You?
A shared minibus and a private driver can follow the same road to the Sahara and still feel like two different trips. Here is what actually changes, and what it costs.

Most people planning Morocco reach the same fork early: join a group tour, or book a private one. Both can take you from Marrakech to the dunes of Merzouga and back. The difference is not the destination but everything around it — who decides when you stop, who you share the car with, where you sleep, and how much of the day belongs to you.
This guide sets the two side by side honestly, including the price, because a private tour is not always as expensive as people assume once there are three or four of you.
| Group tour | Private tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Shared minibus with strangers | Your own air-conditioned vehicle |
| Start time | Fixed, often very early, with several hotel pick-ups | When you choose, from your own hotel or riad |
| Route | Fixed; the same every departure | Adjustable before and during the trip |
| Stops | Set photo stops and set lunch places | Where you want, as long as you want |
| Desert camp | Usually a standard shared camp | Ask for the camp standard you want |
| Driver | Shared attention across the whole bus | Your driver, your questions, your pace |
| Price | Lowest per person for one traveller | Falls sharply per person as the group grows |
On the classic routes the driving is long whichever way you travel. Marrakech to Merzouga is a full day on the road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and through the Dades and Todra valleys. What changes is what happens inside that day.
A group tour has to keep a timetable for everyone, so stops are short and fixed. A private driver stops when you ask: an extra half hour at Ait Ben Haddou in good light, a walk in the Todra Gorge before the crowds, a roadside tea that was not on any itinerary. Over three or four days those small decisions add up to a different trip.
Group tours win on price for a solo traveller, and that is not close. A private tour costs the vehicle and the driver whether one person rides in it or seven, so the price per person drops as the group grows. These are our own per-person prices in euros for three of our most-booked tours:
| Tour | 1 person | 2 people | 4 people | 6 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-day Sahara tour to Zagora | 515 | 255 | 180 | 150 |
| 4-day Sahara tour to Merzouga | 1,020 | 540 | 375 | 320 |
| Atlas Mountains day trip | 190 | 95 | 38 | 30 |
The pattern is the point: for a couple the private price is roughly half the solo price per person, and for a family or a group of friends it drops further. Compare that with a group tour on the same route and remember to add what a private tour includes and many group tours do not — hotel pick-up, the camp standard you asked for, and a whole day that runs to your schedule.

For many travellers the night in the Sahara is the reason for the whole trip, and it is where group and private tours diverge most. Group tours generally use large standard camps with shared facilities. On a private tour you can ask for the camp standard that suits you, from a standard camp to a luxury camp with a private tent, a proper bed and an en-suite bathroom. We compare the two in detail in luxury vs standard desert camps.
If none of the fixed itineraries fits, a private tour can be built around your dates, your departure city and your pace. For one traveller, yes. For two or more the gap narrows quickly, because the vehicle and driver cost the same however many people travel. Our 4-day Sahara tour is 1,020 euros for one person but 540 per person for two and 320 per person for six.
Yes. A private tour can be adjusted before you travel and, within reason, during the trip, such as longer stops, a different lunch place or an extra walk.
Our multi-day Sahara tours include the night in a desert camp. Ask us about the camp standard when you book.
Generally yes. The difference between group and private tours is comfort, pace and flexibility, not safety.
