Zagora Desert Tours: Private 2-Day Sahara Trips from Marrakech
A Zagora desert tour is the shortest way to sleep in the Sahara from Marrakech: two days, about 7 hours of driving each way over the High Atlas, past Ait Ben Haddou and along the palm groves of the Draa Valley to a desert camp near Zagora, with a sunset camel ride and a night under the stars.
Zagora or Merzouga?
Morocco has two classic desert destinations from Marrakech, and the choice mostly comes down to time:
| Zagora | Merzouga | |
|---|---|---|
| Driving from Marrakech | About 7 hours | About 9–10 hours (560 km) |
| Shortest trip | 2 days, 1 night | 3 days, 2 nights |
| Dunes | Smaller dune fields and stony desert | Erg Chebbi, dunes up to about 150 m |
| On the way | Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley | Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges |
| Best for | A short stay or a first taste of the desert | The big sand dunes, with three days or more |
If you have three days or more, the high dunes of Erg Chebbi are worth the extra driving; see our Merzouga desert tours. If you have two days, Zagora gives you the Atlas, a UNESCO kasbah, a palm valley and a night in the desert without rushing. Our guide to Merzouga vs Zagora compares them in detail.
The 2-day route from Marrakech to Zagora
Day 1: Marrakech, the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley
Your driver-guide collects you from your riad or hotel in the morning and climbs the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. After lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar listed by UNESCO in 1987, the road passes Ouarzazate and Agdz and follows the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river, through palm groves and kasbahs. Near Zagora you swap the car for a camel and ride to the camp for sunset, dinner and a night in a tent.
Day 2: sunrise and the drive back
Wake early for sunrise over the desert, have breakfast at the camp and ride back to the vehicle. The return to Marrakech follows the same road over the Atlas, with stops wherever you want them, and you are back in the evening.
What a private Zagora tour includes
- Your own vehicle and driver-guide for both days, with pick-up and drop-off at your riad or hotel in Marrakech.
- Your date and your pace: longer at the kasbah, a photo stop in the palm grove, lunch where you like.
- A camel ride into the camp at sunset and back in the morning.
- A night in a desert camp near Zagora with dinner and breakfast.

Beyond Zagora: Erg Chigaga and longer routes
South of Zagora, past M’Hamid, the road ends and the larger, remote dunes of Erg Chigaga begin, reached by 4x4. That trip needs more days and is built on request rather than as a fixed tour; read Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga and tell us your dates on the custom tour page. Zagora is also famous for the old sign that gives the caravan time to Timbuktu as 52 days by camel.
When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons. Desert nights are cold from December to February, so bring warm layers, and in summer the interior often passes 40°C, when early starts help. Our Sahara weather by month has the details. Short of time? An evening in the stony Agafay desert, under an hour from Marrakech, is the alternative; see Agafay or Sahara.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Zagora from Marrakech?
About 7 hours by road, over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley. That is why a Zagora desert tour from Marrakech is usually two days with one night in a desert camp.
Is Zagora real Sahara desert?
Yes, Zagora is on the edge of the Sahara, but its dunes are smaller than those of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, which rise to about 150 m. Zagora suits a short trip; for the big sand dunes, plan three days or more to Merzouga.
Can I do Zagora in one day from Marrakech?
It is not recommended. With about 7 hours of driving each way, a day trip leaves no time in the desert. For a single day, Ait Ben Haddou or the Agafay desert near Marrakech make far better outings.
Is the Zagora tour private?
Yes. You have your own vehicle and driver-guide for both days, pick-up at your riad or hotel and a start date you choose. The desert camp may have other guests, but the car and the guide are yours alone.
What should I bring for a night in the desert?
Warm layers for the evening and early morning, especially from December to February, a scarf against sun and sand, sun cream, sunglasses, a head torch and a small overnight bag; the main luggage can stay in the vehicle.
