Hot Air Balloon in Marrakech: Price, What to Expect & Is It Worth It?

A sunrise balloon flight over the Palmeraie with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon is one of the most memorable things to do in Marrakech. Here is how the morning works, what it costs, when to fly and how to choose a good operator.

Hot air balloon lifting off at sunrise near Marrakech as guests watch from the launch site

Quick answer: a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech is a sunrise experience lasting about five hours door to door, with 40 to 60 minutes in the air over the Palmeraie and the Jbilet hills, the Atlas Mountains on the horizon and a Berber breakfast afterwards. Shared flights typically cost 150 to 220 euros per person. For most visitors it is worth it, and it takes only a morning.

How the morning works

  1. Pickup before dawn. A driver collects you from your hotel or riad, usually between 5:00 and 6:30 am depending on the season. The launch site is about 30 to 45 minutes north of the city.
  2. Tea while the balloon inflates. You are welcomed with mint tea or coffee and watch the crew fill the envelope, which is a show in itself.
  3. Safety briefing and take-off. The pilot explains the landing position, you climb into the basket and lift off around sunrise.
  4. The flight. You drift over palm groves, Berber villages and dry plains as the sun comes up over the High Atlas. On clear days Toubkal is visible.
  5. Landing and breakfast. After landing you are driven to a Berber tent or house for a traditional breakfast: msemen, bread, olive oil, honey, amlou, eggs and tea.
  6. Certificate and return. You receive a flight certificate and are back in Marrakech by late morning, with the rest of the day free.

How much does it cost?

Flight typeTypical price per personBasket
Classic shared flight€150–220Shared, up to 16–20 people
VIP or small-group flight€250–350Smaller basket, upgraded breakfast
Private flightFrom about €300, priced per basketJust your group

Prices should include hotel transfers, the flight, breakfast, insurance and the certificate. Be cautious with offers far below this range: the cost of fuel, crew and licensing does not change, so very cheap tickets usually mean a shorter flight, a crowded basket or extras charged on the day.

Best time of year to fly

  • October to May: the clearest air and snow on the Atlas. Mornings are cold, between 3 and 10°C at take-off.
  • June to September: still a good experience because flights leave at dawn, before the heat. Expect more haze on the horizon.

Flights depend on the weather. If the wind is too strong or visibility is poor, the pilot cancels and a reputable operator offers another date or a full refund. Book the flight for the start of your stay, so there is room to reschedule.

What to wear and bring

  • Layers. It is cold before sunrise and warm by breakfast.
  • Closed, flat shoes. You land in fields.
  • A hat. The burner is warm overhead.
  • A phone or camera with a strap. Drones are not permitted.

Is it safe?

Ballooning around Marrakech is a regulated activity. Operators need authorisation from the civil aviation authority, pilots hold commercial licences and each flight is cleared according to the morning's weather. Choose a company that states its licence and insurance clearly and does not fly in marginal conditions.

Because landings can be firm, the flight is not suitable for pregnant women or for people with recent surgery or serious back problems. Children are generally accepted from around four to six years old.

Is it worth it?

If you have two days or more in Marrakech, yes. It is the only way to see the scale of the landscape, from the palm groves to the snow line, and it is finished before most visitors have had breakfast. It is especially good for couples, honeymoons, birthdays and families with older children.

It may not be for you if you dislike early starts, are travelling on a tight budget, or only have one day in the city, in which case a private city tour is a better use of time.

How to combine it with the rest of your day

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech cost?

A shared sunrise flight with hotel transfers and breakfast typically costs between 150 and 220 euros per person. Our own flight starts from around 160 euros per person. Private baskets and VIP flights with smaller groups cost more, often 300 euros per person or above.

How long is the balloon flight?

Time in the air is usually 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the wind. The whole experience, including hotel pickup, the pre-flight tea, the flight, breakfast and the drive back, takes about five hours, and you are normally back in Marrakech by 10 or 11 am.

What is the best time of year for a balloon ride in Marrakech?

Balloons fly all year. October to May offers the clearest air and the best chance of snow on the Atlas Mountains in the background. Summer flights are still pleasant because they take off at sunrise, before the heat builds.

Is a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech safe?

Yes, when you fly with a licensed operator. Flights are regulated by the Moroccan civil aviation authority, pilots are certified, and flights are cancelled when wind or visibility is outside limits. Ask your operator to confirm their licence and insurance before booking.

Can children and pregnant women fly?

Most operators accept children from about four to six years old who are tall enough to see over the basket, accompanied by an adult. Pregnant women are not allowed to fly, and the flight is not recommended for anyone with recent surgery or serious back or knee problems, because landings can be bumpy.
