Marrakech Airport to City Centre: Taxi, Bus & Private Transfer Guide

Marrakech Menara Airport is only a few kilometres from the Medina, but the arrival is where many trips start badly. Here are your options compared, with realistic prices, times and the mistakes to avoid.

Street life beside the red city walls of Marrakech on the way from the airport to the Medina

Quick answer: Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is 5 to 6 km from the Medina, a 15 to 20 minute drive. You have three realistic options: an official airport taxi (roughly 70 to 100 dirhams by day), the airport bus line 19 (about 30 dirhams) or a pre-booked private transfer with a fixed price and a driver waiting in arrivals. If you are staying in a riad inside the Medina or landing after dark, book the private transfer.

Taking a taxi from the airport

The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals hall. Two types wait there: small beige petits taxis for up to three passengers, and larger grands taxis for groups and longer distances.

  • A board near the rank shows the official fixed fares by destination. Take a photo of it and refer to it.
  • Agree on the total price, for the car and not per person, before your bags go in the boot.
  • Night fares, from about 8 pm, are roughly 50 percent higher.
  • Pay in dirhams with small notes. There are ATMs and exchange desks in the arrivals hall.

Taxis are perfectly safe. The only real issue is price: quotes of 200 to 300 dirhams for the short ride to the Medina are common for new arrivals. Knowing the official fare and being ready to walk to the next driver usually solves it.

Taking the airport bus

Line 19 is the airport express. It leaves from the stop outside the terminal about every half hour during the day and runs a loop through Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main bus and train stations and Gueliz. Buy your ticket from the driver in cash. It is clean, reliable and by far the cheapest way into town.

It works well if you are staying near Jemaa el-Fnaa or in Gueliz and travelling light. It works less well late in the evening, with large suitcases, or if your riad is deep in the Medina.

Booking a private transfer

With a private transfer, the driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with your name on a board, helps with luggage and takes you directly to your accommodation at a price agreed beforehand. If your riad is inside the Medina, the driver calls ahead so that someone meets you at the gate and walks you to the door.

This is the option we recommend for late-night flights, families with children, groups, and anyone arriving in Morocco for the first time. We arrange airport transfers and private drivers from Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, Tangier and Agadir airports.

The Medina problem: cars cannot reach your riad

Most riads are in narrow pedestrian lanes. No vehicle can drive to the door, so every option ends with a walk of 2 to 10 minutes from the nearest gate or square.

  • Ask your riad which gate or car park is closest and send that name to your driver.
  • Ask the riad to send someone to meet you. Most do this free or for a small tip.
  • If a stranger offers to show you the way, expect to be asked for money. Agree on 10 to 20 dirhams first, or politely decline.
  • Download an offline map before you land.

What to do in the arrivals hall

  1. Passport control. Queues take 20 to 60 minutes at busy times. Have the address of your first accommodation ready.
  2. Cash. Withdraw dirhams from an ATM or change a small amount. See our guide to money in Morocco.
  3. SIM card. Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi have kiosks in arrivals. A tourist SIM with data costs little and makes maps and calls to your riad easy.
  4. Transport. Your private driver waits just after customs. The taxi rank and the bus stop are outside the doors.

Getting back to the airport

Allow 30 minutes for the drive from the Medina, plus the walk from your riad to the pickup point, and arrive at the terminal two and a half to three hours before an international flight: there is a security check at the entrance as well as after check-in. Ask your riad or driver to arrange the return the day before.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Marrakech airport from the city centre?

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is about 5 to 6 kilometres from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Medina. The drive takes 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic, and slightly less to Hivernage and Gueliz. The Palmeraie and Agafay are 30 to 45 minutes away.

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the Medina?

Official fares are displayed on a board outside the arrivals hall. Expect roughly 70 to 100 dirhams to the Medina or Gueliz during the day and about 50 percent more at night. Agree on the price before you get in, and have dirhams ready, as drivers rarely give change for large notes or accept cards.

Is there a bus from Marrakech airport to the city?

Yes. The airport express bus, line 19, runs about every 30 minutes during the day between the airport, Jemaa el-Fnaa and Gueliz. A ticket costs around 30 dirhams, paid in cash to the driver. It is the cheapest option, but it does not reach riads inside the Medina.

Is a private airport transfer in Marrakech worth it?

It is worth it if you arrive late at night, travel with children or heavy luggage, or are staying in a riad inside the Medina. The price is fixed in advance, the driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, and someone walks you to the riad door, which a taxi driver will not do.

Can taxis drive to my riad in the Medina?

Usually not. Most of the Medina is closed to cars, so vehicles stop at the nearest gate or square and you walk the last 2 to 10 minutes. Ask your riad for the nearest drop-off point, and arrange for someone to meet you there, especially after dark.
