Tangier, Morocco: Travel Guide to the City on the Strait

Guides de la ville

A Tangier travel guide: the kasbah, Grand Socco and medina, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, ferries from Spain and how Tangier starts a Morocco tour.

Private Morocco tour starting in Tangier

Tangier is Morocco’s gateway port on the Strait of Gibraltar, within sight of Spain on a clear day. It rewards a day or two: the hilltop kasbah and the medina’s white lanes, Café Hafa above the sea, Cap Spartel where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and the Caves of Hercules. It is also the natural start for a tour to Chefchaouen, Fes and the Sahara.

Why Tangier is different

For much of the 20th century Tangier was an international zone governed by several foreign powers, and it drew writers, artists and traders from Europe and America. That history still shows in its architecture, its cafés and its mix of languages. Today it is a large, modern port city with a renovated waterfront and an old town that is easy to explore on foot.

What to see in Tangier

The kasbah

The walled kasbah sits at the top of the medina, with the former sultan’s palace, Dar el Makhzen, now the Kasbah Museum. Terraces at the edge look straight across the strait.

Grand Socco, Petit Socco and the medina

The Grand Socco is the busy square between the new town and the medina; downhill, the small Petit Socco was once the heart of international Tangier, ringed by cafés. The lanes between them hold food markets, workshops and the Tangier American Legation, the first property the United States owned abroad, now a museum.

Café Hafa

A terraced café open since 1921 on the cliffs west of the kasbah, where you drink mint tea above the sea.

Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

West of the city, the Cap Spartel lighthouse marks the north-western tip of Africa, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. A little further down the coast, the Caves of Hercules have a sea-facing opening often compared to the shape of Africa.

Beaches near Tangier

The city beach along the bay is lively in summer, but the nicer sand is outside town: Achakar beach, near the Caves of Hercules on the Atlantic side, has wide sand and big sunsets, and the coves east of the city face the Mediterranean. Atlantic water is cool even in summer, and the wind can be strong.

Practical tips

  • Arriving by ferry: expect people offering guide services at the port. Agree any price first, or arrange your pick-up before you travel.

  • Getting around: the medina and kasbah are best on foot; Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules need a car or taxi.

  • Where to stay: a guesthouse in the kasbah gives views and atmosphere, while hotels along the bay and in the new town are easier to reach by car.

  • Weather: Tangier has a Mediterranean climate: mild, wetter winters and warm summers, cooler than inland Morocco. Spring and early autumn are ideal.

  • Language: Spanish is widely understood alongside Arabic and French, a legacy of the city’s position and history.
