The Sahara is the reason most people come to Morocco, and it is further away than almost anyone expects. Erg Chebbi, the sea of dunes at Merzouga, is about 560 km from Marrakech — nine to ten hours of driving on the far side of the High Atlas. There is no version of this trip that fits in a day, and anyone selling you one is selling you a long drive.
What the distance buys you is the best road in Morocco. The route crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, drops into the pre-Saharan south, and passes Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge before the horizon turns orange. On a private tour those stops are the trip, not an interruption to it.

Merzouga for almost everyone. Zagora exists for one case: you have exactly two days and want a camp night under the stars, and you accept that the dunes will be modest.
The camel trek leaves about 90 minutes before sunset and takes an hour to an hour and a half, with a stop on a high dune. A 4x4 transfer to camp is always available at no extra cost if you would rather not ride. Dinner is a tagine, there is drumming around the fire, and the sky has no light pollution in it. Camps range from shared-facility tents to en-suite tents with real beds and hot showers — the private bathroom is the upgrade most people notice.
October to April. Days are 19–25°C and perfect; nights are cold and can approach freezing in January, so bring a proper jacket. June to August regularly passes 43°C and the desert is only comfortable at dawn and dusk.

Heading east from Marrakech, in order: the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO-listed rammed-earth ksar), Ouarzazate and its Taourirt Kasbah, the Dades Valley with its hairpin road and red rock, Todra Gorge where the limestone narrows to about ten metres, then Erfoud, Rissani and the dunes. From Fes, the road runs through Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest and the Ziz Valley, which is a canyon filled with hundreds of thousands of date palms.
Every tour here is private. The vehicle is a fixed cost, so the per-person price falls sharply with group size — four people sharing one 4x4 pay far less each than a couple. On this route specifically, private is worth more than usual: you stop where the light is good rather than where the schedule says.
Tell us your dates and which cities you fly into and out of, and we will tell you honestly which desert works — including when the answer is that you do not have enough days for Merzouga and should do something else with the time.
